About Our Orangeries

What is an Orangery?
As an extension, an orangery is a brick structure with large windows, and most often a flat roof with a glass lantern. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, they were their own rooms on the ground floors of grand houses, and they were used for the cultivation of oranges and other fruit trees during the wintertime. However, they were not just seen as simple greenhouses, but were also considered symbols of wealth and status. Owners of properties would often conduct tours for their guests to admire both the plants and the structure, the interiors would often be decorated with fountains or grottos, and most would have had areas specifically for entertaining guests.

FAQs
The difference between an orangery and a conservatory is that a conservatory’s roof is entirely made of glass. An orangery’s roof will usually have a solid perimeter and a fully glazed centre (called a lantern) to allow light to come through.
Like conservatories, orangeries are usually considered permitted developments and will not need planning permission in most cases. There are some exceptions to this, however, when the specifications of the planned work don’t meet the criteria set. If you think your dream orangery will fall outside of the guidelines, it is best to check.
One of the benefits of an orangery is that it can be used all year round! An orangery styled as a traditional extension, with brick walls and a solid perimeter, will trap more heat to keep it warm in the winter. The reduced amount of sunlight will also keep it cooler in the summer.
Orangeries make for wonderfully versatile spaces, with uses ranging from offices and living rooms to greenhouses and play areas, so it is more than possible to add a kitchen into one that has been built as well. It could even enhance its use, if you want a place for comfortable summer dining!
