About Our Orangeries

Orangery

What is an Orangery?

As an extension, an orangery is a brick structure with large windows, and most often a flat roof with a glass lantern. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, they were their own rooms on the ground floors of grand houses, and they were used for the cultivation of oranges and other fruit trees during the wintertime. However, they were not just seen as simple greenhouses, but were also considered symbols of wealth and status. Owners of properties would often conduct tours for their guests to admire both the plants and the structure, the interiors would often be decorated with fountains or grottos, and most would have had areas specifically for entertaining guests.

What are the Benefits of Building an Orangery?

Many of the benefits found in the traditional orangeries of old can also be found in the modern orangeries of today. They make an ideal space for entertaining company, especially during summer months when you can open the French, folding or sliding doors out into a garden, allowing you and your loved ones to enjoy a party, barbecue or get-together with all the luxuries and comforts of dining indoors, while keeping the fun, relaxing atmosphere and freedom of the outdoors.

You may also choose to keep your orangery for personal use, rather than for group gatherings. Fitting an orangery to your property can give you the space you need for the home office you have always wanted, as they are often quiet spaces away from other areas. The large windows and glass around the tiled roof can fill the room with natural light, too, making them excellent for art studios. If you have something of a green thumb, you may also consider using them to cultivate flowers or other plants, keeping your purchase’s classical use to further your own hobbies in the present day.

What you choose to use your new orangery for is completely up to you, which is why it is also an added benefit that they come in many styles, and can be built to be as bespoke or as ready-designed as you would like. You can make your space completely unique, and we can help you through every step of ordering, designing and building when you choose to order one of our products.

FAQs

What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?

The difference between an orangery and a conservatory is that a conservatory’s roof is entirely made of glass. An orangery’s roof will usually have a solid perimeter and a fully glazed centre (called a lantern) to allow light to come through.

Do I need planning permission for an orangery?

Like conservatories, orangeries are usually considered permitted developments and will not need planning permission in most cases. There are some exceptions to this, however, when the specifications of the planned work don’t meet the criteria set. If you think your dream orangery will fall outside of the guidelines, it is best to check.

Can you use an orangery all year round?

One of the benefits of an orangery is that it can be used all year round! An orangery styled as a traditional extension, with brick walls and a solid perimeter, will trap more heat to keep it warm in the winter. The reduced amount of sunlight will also keep it cooler in the summer.

Can you have a kitchen in an orangery?

Orangeries make for wonderfully versatile spaces, with uses ranging from offices and living rooms to greenhouses and play areas, so it is more than possible to add a kitchen into one that has been built as well. It could even enhance its use, if you want a place for comfortable summer dining!
