Window Maintenance Tips From the Experts

Window Maintenance Tips from the Experts

Maintaining your windows throughout the year is one of the best ways to prolong the life of your windows. Regular maintenance will help you improve window appearance and will save you loads of money on window repair at the same time. When we install new UPVC sash windows for our customers, we provide maintenance advice so they can keep their windows looking good all year round.

When is Window Maintenance Required?

If you have had your windows for a very long time, you may be wondering when maintenance required. At South Coast Home Improvements, we are passionate about supplying our customers with the knowledge they need to effectively maintain and care for their windows.

With the proper maintenance, our windows are made to last a lifetime. Common signs your windows require maintenance are as follows:

  • Your windows do not open or close easily.
  • The windows rattle or whistle in the wind.
  • The windows are covered in dirt.
  • Window frames are yellowing or dirty.

Things You Can Do to Maintain Your Sash Windows

While we recommend professional maintenance of your sash windows at all times, there are a few steps you can take to ensure that your windows are kept in top form throughout the year. Below we have listed some top tips and advice from our expert window installers.

Keep Your Windows Clean

This simple piece of advice will keep your windows in good condition throughout the year. Regularly cleaning your windows will prevent dirt build-up, stop frames from sticking together, and ensure your windows are able to function effectively.

When cleaning your windows, wipe them down carefully with a damp microfiber cloth and a glass cleaner or mild detergent. We advise against using paper towels as all they tend to do is move the dirt around on the window pane while creating static on the glass. Microfibre cloths work a real treat and will help keep your windows clean.

Conduct Visual Checks on Your Windows

An important part of proper window care and maintenance is to conduct regular visual checks. Thoroughly checking over your windows every few months, on the inside and the outside, helps you notice problems before they develop into anything significant. When conducting a visual check, you’re searching for obvious problems like cracked, chipped or peeling paintwork, gaps around the window frames, and broken window latches or handles.

Keep Your Windows Well-Oiled

Windows that are well-oiled function smoothly. We recommend rubbing beeswax along any edges as this extra lubricant helps make opening and closing your windows easier. Regularly oiling your windows also provides a good opportunity to check for any grit or dirt that may be built up on the window tracks, causing the windows to stick.

New Window Installation

Sometimes, our customers have done everything they can to maintain their windows over the years but the age of their windows can no longer be denied and a replacement is required.
