How to Install Bifold Doors Yourself

Installing bifold doors is something that needs to be done carefully and with as much accuracy as possible. If you only do a half-hearted job, you will be left with gaps around the door frames, damage to the railings, and potentially security risks to your home.

What’s more, bifold doors are most commonly installed in kitchens and living rooms, so that homeowners have easy access to the garden or patio. This means that your home will be exposed to the elements while the installation is carried out.

So, if you are planning to install bifold doors yourself, it’s essential that you know what you are doing before making a start. While it generally takes about an hour to install bifold doors, if you don’t know what you’re doing it could take a lot longer. Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to carry out the installation. You want to get it right!

How to Fit Bifold Doors: What to Consider

How to Fit Bifold Doors: What to Consider

Before you make a start on the installation, there are a few essential points to consider.

Planning Permission: If your home is less than 100 years old and it is not a listed building, it’s unlikely you would require planning permission. However, it is always important to ask the authorities before carrying out extensive home improvements. After all, you don’t want to do all this work and then find out later that your new bifold doors have actually been installed against planning permission and building regulations. So, always check.

Check the Door Opening: before starting work on your new bifold doors, you should make sure that the opening of your door is in decent condition. Over the years, it is not uncommon for door openings to experience some wear and tear.

This can leave them vulnerable to burglars, changing weather conditions, and further damage. It is also worth noting that installing new bifold doors onto a less-than-ideal door opening can be more hassle than it’s worth, leaving gaps around the frame and a door that is unequally hung.

Always Take Exact Measurements: to ensure that your new bifold doors actually fit properly, it is essential that you carry out exact measurements. Consider the fact that you’re not just accounting for the new bifold doors, but you are also installing tracking hardware that will sit inside the door frame, allowing the doors to function properly.

How to Install Bifold Doors Yourself in 7 Steps

Below we have written out 7 simple steps to help you install your new bifold doors properly so that they function well and last a long time.

  1. Depending on the bifold door you buy, the door sill might arrive pre-assembled (in which case you can skip to step 3), but if this is not the case you will need to drill your pilot holes where needed.
  2. This step involves a lot of heavy lifting, so it is best if you have a friend to help you. Lift the door frame and guide it into the aperture until the frame and your pilot holes match up. Once you’re sure it looks right, lower the frame to the ground and work on preparing the permanent fixings.
  3. Start drilling 8mm holes through the door frame, ensuring they line up accurately with the markings on your opening (this is where exact measuring is essential). Then push your fixing bolts through, tightening them until you are happy with the results.
  4. It is now time to fix the sill and head, making sure to tighten everything bit by bit, while keeping everything level. Tighten everything until the lintel is just about to touch the frame and then attach the hinges at both sides.
  5. Attach the hinges to the doors (if they have not been pre-attached already). How and where to attach the hinges will vary depending on whether your bifold doors are being hung from the top or not.
  6. Once the hinges are in place, you are ready to hang your bifold doors. The hinges should match up and be connected using hinge pins. You will also need to attach rollers to the door hinges in the right places.
  7. Once your bifold doors have been fitted, consider adding some weather sealant to ensure everything is properly sealed and secure.
